Burley & Tyrrell Co. Antique Porcelain Plate with Hand-Applied Enamel & Gilt, Germany, Circa 1891–1907
Wild roses in blush pink and cream drift across this generous plate as if gathered loose from a summer garden. The softly shaded florals were then finished by hand: run a fingertip across the petals and you'll feel delicate raised enamel highlights, and each bloom's heart is ringed with beaded gilt that catches the light as the plate turns. Fine silver-toned sprigs scatter between the bouquets, and at the rim, molded scrolls tinted the palest sky-blue rise from the porcelain. A beaded gold border frames it all.
The plate was imported by Burley & Tyrrell Co. of Chicago, one of the city's established china and glassware houses, and carries their crowned shield mark with "Germany," dating it to circa 1891–1907. That makes it well over a century old, from the era when American hostesses set their tables with the finest porcelain Europe could send.
At nearly 12 inches across, it's lovely on a plate stand or wall, and just as graceful serving cake or petits fours at an unhurried afternoon gathering.
Measures 11 7/8 inches in diameter.
Condition: Very good antique condition. No chips, cracks, or crazing. Mild wear to the gilt, consistent with age.
