Jean Pouyat Limoges (J.P.L.) Antique Covered Vegetable Tureen, France, Circa 1911-1914
Garlands of pink roses and sage-green scrollwork sweep around this round, footed covered vegetable tureen, with smaller floral sprays scattered across the well of the bowl as if tossed there by hand. Both the bowl and lid rims are scalloped, twin gilt-accented loop handles frame the body, and a sculptural gilt finial rises from a delicate gilt spray at the center of the lid.
Made by Jean Pouyat, Limoges, France, circa 1911–1914, the tureen carries both of the factory's marks together. The black "J.P.L. FRANCE" stamp identifies the porcelain blank as Pouyat's own manufacture. The green "Pouyat Limoges" laurel wreath confirms the decoration was done in-house at the Pouyat studio rather than sent out to an independent decorator. Finding both marks on a single piece narrows the dating to this brief window, when Guérin had taken over Pouyat's manufacturing but the factory continued using its established marks. The pattern is an unnamed pink floral transferware.
Dimensions: 8" diameter, 10¼" handle to handle, 5" tall.
Condition: A stable vertical crack runs through the foot ring and is visible on both the interior and exterior surfaces (fully disclosed in the detail photographs). It is confined to the foot ring and does not extend into the bowl wall. Buyers should understand this is a through-crack rather than a surface flaw. We recommend hand washing only and avoiding sudden temperature changes. The gilt shows light wear, as expected for a piece of this age. There are no chips or additional cracks.
Set at the center of a holiday table, it carries more than a century of French craftsmanship into the meals still to come.
