Nippon Hand-Painted Serving Bowl, Wide Gold Border — Morimura Brothers, c. 1911–1921
An antique Nippon serving bowl with a wide gold border reserved with white stylized leaf and fan motifs, a more elaborate treatment than the flat-gilt rims found on most Nippon pieces of this kind. Inside the border, a hand-painted garland of soft orange blossoms and sage-green leaves trails along fine gold vines accented with small raised gold dots.
The bowl carries the Morimura Brothers “M in Wreath” backstamp, used from 1911 to 1921. Japanese porcelain imported to the United States was marked “Nippon” until 1921, when U.S. Customs began requiring the word “Japan,” so this piece is more than a century old.
Measures 9⅝" in diameter, 10½" handle to handle, and 2½" tall, with pierced tab handles. No chips or cracks. Noticeable wear to the gold, most visible as thinning along the outer rim and upper border, consistent with a century of use. The painted garland is bright.
