Wedgwood Jasperware "Britannia" Lidded Box, Royal Mint Classics by Philip Nathan — Limited Edition of 2000

Wedgwood's jasperware is one of the most recognizable achievements in English ceramics — an unglazed stoneware perfected by Josiah Wedgwood in 1774, prized for its matte, porcelain-smooth finish and its ability to take crisp, applied relief decoration in contrasting white. This pale blue example carries that tradition forward two centuries later, its lid and body wrapped in a classic laurel garland band, hand-applied in the same white sprigging technique Wedgwood has used since the 18th century.

The medallion on the lid depicts Britannia — trident raised, cloak billowing — driving a chariot pulled by a pair of rearing horses, a scene drawn from the long tradition of Britannia as the personification of Britain on coins and medals dating back to Roman-era currency. This piece belongs to Wedgwood's Royal Mint Classics series, a collaboration pairing Wedgwood's ceramic artistry with coinage-inspired imagery, designed by Philip Nathan — a sculptor and medallist whose work for the Royal Mint includes some of Britain's most familiar coin designs. Produced in a limited edition of 2,000, this piece links two great English institutions of craftsmanship, the Wedgwood works and the Royal Mint, in a single object.
