Wedgwood Jasperware “Britannia” Oval Lidded Box, Royal Mint Classics by Philip Nathan — Limited Edition of 2,000

A pale blue Wedgwood jasperware box, the unglazed stoneware Josiah Wedgwood perfected in the 1770s, prized for its matte finish and crisp white relief. The body is wrapped in a white garland of oak leaves and acorns, applied using Wedgwood’s traditional sprigging technique.

The lid carries a white relief medallion of Britannia, helmeted and holding her trident, driving a chariot drawn by two galloping horses. The scene comes from Philip Nathan’s design for the 1997 Britannia coin. Nathan was the sculptor and medallist behind the Royal Mint’s Britannia bullion coins, and this box belongs to Wedgwood’s Royal Mint Classics series, which translated his coin imagery into jasperware.

The underside of the lid is printed “Royal Mint Classics, Britannia, by Philip Nathan, Limited Edition of 2000,” and the box is impressed “Wedgwood, Made in England.” Measures [dimensions]. No chips or cracks; the relief is crisp and the lid fits well. A few tiny kiln specks on the interior and the underside of the lid.
