Rosenthal “Delft” Serving Dish, Versailles Shape — Windmill & Winter Road Scene, Antique Germany, c. 1891–1906
An antique Rosenthal porcelain serving dish from the company’s Delft series, decorated in cobalt blue with a Dutch winter scene: a horse-drawn cart passing before a windmill, a lamppost along the pale road, figures walking in the distance, and a second windmill across the water beneath a broad, cloud-filled sky.
The dish is Rosenthal’s Versailles shape, a lobed form with a gently scalloped rim and molded scrollwork.
Marked on the reverse with the Delft series’ blue vase-form R&C mark, “Delft,” and “Germany,” together with Rosenthal’s green crown-and-crossed-rods R.C. mark, the shape name “Versailles,” and the painted number “100.” The R&C marks were used until 1906, placing this dish at well over a century old.
Measures 10 7/8" diameter, 2¼" deep.
Condition: No chips, cracks, or repairs. The decoration is crisp with no wear. A few small kiln specks appear in the glaze on the face. The underside has a cluster of small brown spots near the marks that do not clean off, along with a raised, unglazed molded strip that shows light surface discoloration.
