Rosenthal & Thomas Hand-Painted Alpine Wildflower Collection — Munich Handmalerei Coffee Service, Signed Plaques & Vase, 8 Pieces, Mid-20th Century
An eight-piece collection devoted to the Alpine wildflower trio of blue gentian, white edelweiss, and pink alpenrose, hand-painted by Rosenthal’s Munich hand-painting department (Handmalerei München) and by Thomas, the Marktredwitz factory Rosenthal acquired in 1908.
At its heart is a three-piece coffee service: coffee pot, creamer, and covered sugar. Each piece carries its own hand-painted botanical study, and the coffee pot pairs a full gentian, edelweiss, and alpenrose bouquet with a lady’s slipper orchid on its reverse. A saucer and salad plate, each painted with a gentian spray, complete the tableware. The tableware is marked with Rosenthal’s green crown mark, “Germany,” and “München Handmalerei” in orange. The coffee service corresponds to Rosenthal’s “Alpine Flowers” pattern (c. 1952), known for its individually varied wildflower studies; the Thomas vase carries the same alpine trio in a closely matching hand-painted decoration.
Two miniature hand-painted porcelain plaques, signed “E. Baumgartner” and “Etzengruber,” carry Rosenthal’s gold “Weltmarke Rosenthal Handmalerei” labels on their original backings, identifying the design as “Nr. 6 Enzian-Edelweiß-Alpenrose.” The Etzengruber plaque also bears the Rosenthal crown mark on its face. They’re presented in two different frames: a simple cream-and-gilt molding and an ornate cream-and-gold Rococo-style frame.
A bulbous Thomas vase, marked with the Thomas shield and “Handmalerei,” carries the same wildflower trio, with a flared trumpet neck and a beaded collar.
Condition: No chips, cracks, or damage to the porcelain; the painted decoration is crisp, and the sugar and teapot lids fit well. The plaque backings show age-related staining and edge wear, including a small tear at one corner; the frames are otherwise in great shape, showing no signs of wear from the front when displayed.
